This program was introduced in the year 1991 to motivate, identify and nurture the young talented science students from 8 Northeastern States. Since then, this program is being run without any interruption and a large number of students have been benefited under this program. Presently, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) , Govt. of India is providing financial assistance to continue this program.
This program covers the students studying under any board in any school / college in any of the 8 northeastern states namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
i) Junior Level
· Motivational Programs : It consists of science workshops, seminars etc. for motivating students to study science in higher level. These programs are held for the students of class IX and X at different schools in all these States.
· Identification Program: This part of the program aims to identify the young talented science students of this region and inspire them to continue and excel in their study of science. The Junior Talent Search Test (JTST) is organized every year for the identification of scholars and awardees. The scholars and awardees enjoys a monthly scholarship for two years and one time book grant.
· Nurture Program : The scholars and awardees so selected will be nurtured through Follow-Up programs, vacation classes, talent enrichment programs etc. to expose them to the beautiful world of science and make them curious about it. They are also provided the counseling to make them aware about various career and research opportunities in different areas of science.
ii) Senior Level
This part of the program is introduced from this tear only. It was a growing demand for scholars to launch a follow up program for them so that they can avail the opportunities under this program for some more years. Accordingly a Senior Talent Search program shall be commenced from this year. A separate Senior Talent Search Test (STST) will be organized to identify the scholars at various centres all over these States. The scholars shall enjoy a monthly scholarship for two years and one time book grant.
i) Junior Level : Students who have passed Secondary or equivalent from any board from any State in this year (2008) only and presently studying science in class XI under any board in any institution of the 8 northeastern States is eligible to appear in this test. Both conditions should be satisfied.
ii) Senior Level : Students who have passed Higher Secondary or equivalent from any board from any of the 8 northeastern States in this year (2008) only and presently studying basic science (Hons.) / Engineering / medicine in 1st year undergraduate level in any institution of the 8 northeastern States is eligible to appear in this test. Both conditions should be satisfied. Students from Pass course and diploma courses are not eligible.
Applications forms will be sent to a large number of institutions in July, 2008. However, it can be obtained from our office by sending a self addressed stamped (Rs.10/-) envelop or can be downloaded from our website www.jbnsts.org/applicationform1.htm. The last date for submission of forms (both JTST and STST) is September 30, 2008.
i) Junior Level : 1st. phase consists of Multiple Choice Questions covering the syllabus of IX, X and XI The short listed candidates will appear for another written test for final selection.
ii) Senior Level : 1st. Phase : Multiple Choice Questions, in-depth questions, thought passage etc covering the syllabus of XI & XII (Sc) and 1st. year B.Sc./ Engg. /Medicine courses. The short listed candidates will appear for an interview for final selection.
More than 40 Centres will be arranged at all prominent places all over the region. However, if a minimum of 30 candidates apply from a particular place, one examination centre may be arranged at that place subject to approval of Director, JBNSTS.
i) Junior Level (Total 150 nos.) :
a) Scholarship (50 nos.) : Rs.300/- p.m. for 2 years + one time book grant of Rs.750/- only
b) Encouragement Award [I] (50 nos.) :Rs.250/- p.m. for 2 years + one time book grant of Rs.500/- only
c) Encouragement Award [II] (50 nos.) :Rs.150/- p.m. for 2 years + one time book grant of Rs.300/- only
ii) Senior Level :
a) The amount of scholarship is Rs.500/- p.m. and a one time book grant of Rs.1000/-
b) The duration of scholarship is 5 years for basic science students, 4 years for Engineering students and 4 and 1/2 years for medical students or till the completion of M.Sc/ B.Tech/M.B.B.S whichever is earlier.
